KANHYM ESTATES (PTY) LTD
An area of 9 459 ha directly South of Middelburg forms
the heart of Kanhym and is further enhanced by 5 outlying properties near
Heidelberg, Babsfontein, Magaliesburg, Marble Hall and Vereeniging. In total
Kanhym owns 10 277 ha of prime agricultural land. It is Kanhym's business
philosophy to reduce it's financial risk through a program of diversification
but still retain the benefit inherent to economy of scale. Therefore Kanhym
has 4 main production divisions supported by the necessary specialized service
departments.
A total of 6 000 ha are planted by the Agri Division in
a rotational crop program where 70% of the area is planted to maize and 30%
to soya beans. This does not make the Company self sufficient in these commodities
as the Kanhym Mill Division requires vast supplies in order to manufacture
the 250,000 tons of animal feeds annually. Kanhym focuses primarily on poultry,
pig and beef cattle feeds and distributes in bulk to larger clients or in
bagged form through its network of agents.
World class genetics for the Kanhym Piggery Division is
sourced from Pig Improvement Company of the U.S., thus enabling the Piggery
to produce breeding stock of exceptional quality and sought after carcasses
for the RSA pork market. Speeding up genetic improvement on customers farms
is accomplished through the supply of liquid genetics (boar semen). A total
of 150,000 pigs are produced in the various Kanhym herds.
Originally Kanhym was known as a mayor player in the Cattle
feedlot arena. The need to move away from the commodity world of beef carcasses
to a brand supported retail presence was a logical strategy. Quality and
food safety were the main driving forces when Kanhym developed the Tenderlicious
brand for their beef and Slenderlicious for itÍs pork. Application has been
launched for the registration of Leanerlicious as a trademark for our lamb.
Guarantees given under these brand names are monitored and certified by the
SA Meat Industry Company (SAMIC).
The most exciting development was to establish the Kanhym
Fresh Meat Deli in Middelburg. The success of this unit has recently lead
to the creation of the Kanhym Fresh Meat Deli franchise. Here an up market
fresh meat deli with selected complementary products, servicing the retail
and catering markets has been developed. The target markets will be the more
discerning buyer where quality is a non negotiable.
The development of Kanhym's human capital has been a driving force for many
years and has lead to a new generation of junior managers in all of Kanhym's
departments. The human resources department oversees this program in conjunction
with various community upliftment initiatives.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
As Kanhym grew and expanded it recognised the need
to give back to the community in which it operates. Social responsibility
is an imperative for Kanhym. A policy of social and environmental upliftment
for the local community was devised. This is evident in many of KanhymÍs
projects and initiatives, for e.g. the medical assistance programme, realising
home ownership, etc.
An fully equipped day clinic, which facilitates primary
health care and educates the local community about critical issues such as
AIDS awareness and family planning is operational. In addition, a full time
medical nurse is available, in order to attend to the medical needs of Kanhym's
employees and their families. Further support is given by referrals to the
local Doctors.
A portion of the farm was sold to the Steve Tshwete Municipality
to establish a 3000 plot township. Here people live in formal surroundings
near to a number of major employers. The primary and secondary schools that
were originally built by Kanhym Estates on the farm were moved to this new
township.
A formal skills shortage matrix is constantly being updated in order to focus training needs on specific skills. ABET courses are offered to not only the workers but also to their family members. Training courses for the workers of some of our clients were conducted successfully in the past.
